The Carolina Beat Academy’s fundraising event, the Penultimate Party at the Great Room at Top of the Hill, was a well-attended success, with many audience members dressed for the occasion.  Attendees were given the chance to try their hand at scratching and DJing in a successful hands-on portion of the show.  Photos were taken by Wynton Wong, a rising UNC senior who runs Students of the World, a student organization advocating the use of media for public impact.

On Thursday, April 24th, the Carolina Beat Academy welcomed Wilmington, NC rapper/producer KON Sci into Hill Hall, where he held a lecture discussing the art of the MC, as part of Mark Katz’s “The Art and Culture of the DJ” class.  UNC students listened and commented on KON Sci’s freestyles, verses, and beats, and a few even joined the MC for some friendly back-and-forth freestyling.  The lecture is yet another example of the Carolina Beat Academy pushing to expand traditional music education to include instruction on popular music forms.  “I see no dissonance,” says Department Chair Mark Katz, “between the study of classical music and the study of any other kind of music.  It’s all music.”
