UNC Summer Jazz Workshop Begins Today

The UNC Summer Jazz Workshop kicked off today in Kenan Music Building and Hill Hall promptly at 9 AM.  After the initial auditions on Monday, each day will be accompanied by extended improvisation and history instruction, in addition to time set aside for playing in numerous ensembles.   Be sure to join us tonight on the steps of Hill Hall to see the Stephen Anderson trio playing alongside jazz vocalist Kate McGarry at 7 PM.  All concerts, including the one tonight, are free and open to the public.

UNC Rapper Hosts Lyric-Writing Workshop

The Franklin Street Beat Lab is hosting a hip-hop lyric-writing workshop this Friday that is free and open to the public.  Local UNC rapper Cayso, a member of the No9to5 hip-hop collective, will be leading the workshop from 4 – 7 PM.  All aspiring MCs are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and focus on writing.

Chamber Music Workshop Begins

Celebrating 23 years

The Chapel Hill Chamber Music Workshop began yesterday with performances in Person Hall, and is now in full swing on UNC Campus.  Led by Donald Oehler, who also directs the Chapel Hill Philharmonia, the Workshop brings together both professionals and amateurs to practice and learn throughout a week of structured learning.  Musicians of all levels will be assigned to appropriate ensembles to perform at various points throughout the week.  The Aeolus Quartet, the Graduate Resident String Quartet at the Julliard School, will be in residence throughout the week, and will be hosting a concert tonight at 7:30 PM in Person Recital Hall.

Check out the video below to get a glimpse of a new class being offered by the Department of Music, MUSC 146: The Guitar Across Musical Cultures.  The class is taught by graduate student, David Vanderhamm and explores the different types, styles, and meanings of the guitar throughout the world.  The class is open to all students and no prior music experience is necessary.

Join the UNC Global Rhythm Ensemble

The UNC Global Rhythm Ensemble will officially be introduced to students beginning in the Fall semester.  Led by Juan Alamo, who also directs the UNC Percussion Ensemble, the UNC Global Rhythm Ensemble will focus on various drumming traditions and cultures worldwide.  It will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 – 4:15 PM and can be found in the UNC registrar as MUSC 212, Section 7.

WXYC Looking for Summer DJs

UNC student radio station, WXYC, is hosting an interest meeting for prospective summer DJs on Tuesday, May 20th at 6 PM in the Union.  Preceding the meeting, which takes place in Union room 3209, the station will be holding an open house from 4 – 6 PM, where anyone may enter the station, explore the catalogue, and ask questions.  Students interested in a variety of musical genres are encouraged to apply.  At the meeting, students will receive an application to fill out, in addition to signing up for a short interview time.

UNC Professor Juan Alamo Releases New Album

Leader of the UNC Percussion Ensemble and UNC music professor, Juan Alamo, has released his debut album on Big Round Records.  Titled Marimjazzia, the album’s eight tracks, two of which are jazz standards, clock in at just over an hour and include accompaniments by Alamo’s very own percussion ensemble.  Alamo describes Marimjazzia as the “synthesis of all the difference musical influences and experiences I have had throughout my career.”

UNC Students Danny Abrams and Brandon Steiner Performing at SECU Family House

On Monday, May 5th, UNC students Danny Abrams (of Ellis Dyson and The Shambles) and Brandon Steiner held a 45-minute performance at the SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals to help hospital residents unwind after a long day.  In addition to some old jazz staples, modern covers like Outkast’s “Hey Ya” found their way into the setlist.  Watch a video of the performance below.

UNC Department of Music Hosting All-State Band Clinic

Celebrating over 75 years

This weekend, in addition to final exams and ensemble concerts, the UNC Department of Music will also be hosting the North Carolina All-State Honors Band Clinic, beginning Friday, May 2nd and culminating in performances in Memorial Hall on Sunday, May 4th.  Three bands, with ages ranging from middle school to high school seniors, will practice and rehearse in Hill, Kenan, and Memorial Hall throughout the weekend, and will host the concert at 1 PM on Sunday.  Student organizations Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma will be assisting with the Band Hospitality Event on Friday afternoon.

Warner Music Group, a major music recording company, is currently seeking a Chapel Hill-based UNC College Marketing Representative.  The position is paid, and involves creating promotional events for artists, maintaining localized social media pages, networking and creating musical contacts on campus, and impacting the sales of certain artists.  The position requires at least 18 hours of work per week for both the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters.  Music-minded undergraduates are encouraged to apply.
